Design Tips for Family Living

We believe that there is so much joy, creativity, and chaos taming to bring into this unique time when your home is full with family. Let’s chat more about what that could look like.

Thinking interior design for your home is better off when the kids move out? Maybe your home feels too chaotic and messy with littles (or teenagers!) for there to be any reason to really invest? We believe that there is so much joy, creativity, and chaos taming to bring into this unique time when your home is full with family. Let’s chat more about what that could look like.

You Can Have Nice Things

Having nice things can feel nearly impossible when bringing kids into the home. Investing in durable yet beautiful furniture can actually be a reality now! The key words to hunt for are quality leather, performance fabrics, and slipcover sofas. These are a lot more accessible to find and game changers when adding furniture like a sofa or accent chairs into your home.

We see much value and beauty added into the home with these materials. Adding in vintage wood furniture adds some charm and an already lived in feel. Vintage wool patterned rugs are stunning, durable, and hide dirt well.  We also love using leather ottomans in the living room as coffee tables or extra seating that are soft and safe around tinies.

The goal is to create a space that welcomes you to relax and enjoy with your family, not stress about another spill and goldfish mess.

Colorful Moments

Designing a family home is all about joyful color and playful whimsy where it fits. While we love adding in dashes of artistic animal wallpaper and playful color, we still want a foundation that the adults are still in charge here. Balance is key in designing a family home that you and the kids can enjoy.

Choosing the right colors can significantly influence the mood and atmosphere of your living space. Consider colors that resonate with your family's personality. Warm tones like yellows and oranges can create a welcoming and cozy vibe, while cool blues and greens might invoke a sense of calm and PNW nature. Think about the emotions each color brings up and then choose based on where you want to feel relaxed, energized, or inspired. Are there specific shades that remind you of cherished family moments? Adding those colors can bring a sense of shared nostalgia to the home. When designing a family home we want to use colors to signal this stage of life and all its playfulness.

Unique Designs for Families

What feels uniquely special about designing for family homes is creating spaces that blend the individuality of each member into one cohesive family space. In a recent design for a family with middle schoolers, we added a fun Tween lounge with playful wallpaper and lots of shades of pink. In that same home custom built-in desks and reading nooks were designed for everyone to have their own working areas and space to read in the shared living room.

We also love styling with art created by all members of the family, turning your little one's abstract painting into a gem to be hung. Family photos can be framed and hung creatively in entryways, hallways, and shared living rooms. These personal touches define the family home and create a sense of love, warmth, and creativity.

Interior design for families is a dynamic and meaningful work. A season of life you can actually embrace through creative and thoughtful design help.
